CHAPTER 29

Death in Disguise

Gazing out the window of his tour bus the Coventry Gardens serial killer smiled curiously. If everything went according to plan, this would be Superintendent Marshall Carter’s last day of existence. The psychopath appeared to be dressed like an ordinary constable, however he did mask himself with a thick moustache, lengthy sideburns and a distinguished looking goatee. Dark glasses tended to screen the maverick’s eyes.

As commuter vehicles intermingled with streams of heavy traffic, hoards of pedestrians hustled past the majestic New Scotland Yard metropolis in Victoria. At the stroke of noon the red double-decker charter bus slowly pulled up to a reserved parking area. While sightseeing passengers disembarked amid their gaiety, the disguised police officer discreetly blended among the crowd. A badge issued by Vintage Tour Lines conspicuously clung to everyone’s outerwear. The pseudonym on the imposter’s jacket read: Brandt Moore, a random name he retrieved from a local telephone directory. Within minutes the eager visitors entered the renowned law enforcement complex.

As usual a routine metal detector security scan was enforced. Anyone wearing the tour line identification logo was ushered through a second set of iron gates without additional delay. A woman’s voice then echoed from a mini microphone attached to her navy blue tailored suit.

“Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to New Scotland Yard headquarters. My name is detective Cindy Mason, and I will be your tour guide for the next hour. Sorry to say, due to an extraordinary high volume of events, today’s tour will consist of two brief infomercial productions, rather than the normally scheduled walk through procedure. However, I promise you will not be disappointed. So let’s get started. This way please.”

The group was then escorted to a small amphitheater on the third floor where it was seated before a semi-circular stage that exhibited a concave screen. First, an interesting thirty minute video, depicting how Scotland Yard changed its image through the years, captivated the audience. Then a gruesome slide show followed. It brought gasps of horror to the viewers when surreal pictures of Jack the Ripper’s victims flashed upon the screen. The audio that accompanied the exhibition had been similarly shocking and successfully managed to give Moore his money’s worth of excitement.

In winding things up Cindy Mason said, “As previously mentioned, due to an unpredictable high volume of activity, our forensic department has been deemed a restricted area and, unfortunately, the same holds true for our scheduled visit to Superintendent Marshall Carter’s headquarters which happens to be located just above my head. I deeply do apologize for any inconvenience our abbreviated tour caused any of you. We’ll now move to the elevators to our right which will take us to ground level where light refreshments will be served. Before returning to the bus each of you will receive a packet of literature which I believe will answer whatever general questions you may still have. Thank you, everyone, for sharing part of your day with New Scotland Yard. We’ve enjoyed having you with us.”

Brandt Moore noticed a sign that gave him a sigh of relief.
